We are proud to announce that our Litelok Gold Wearable bike lock has been awarded a Red Dot Design 2018 Award. Spanning more than 60 years, The Red Dot Design Award is an international seal of quality, given to a select few products each year that excel in product design, and communication design.
With more than 17,000 yearly entries from design professionals and companies from over 70 countries, the Red Dot Award is now one of the world’s most renowned design competitions. The winning Litelok Gold Wearable is our new, longer range of unisex bicycle locks that can be safely worn around your hips while you cycle. They are designed to sit comfortably around your body and not to get in the way of your cycling. It also features an integrated Lock Stopper, which keeps it securely fastened, but stops it from completely locking meaning you don’t need a key when wearing.
The judges made their decision based on products’ innovation, durability, functionality, and form to name just a few criteria. Litelok founder and inventor, Prof. Neil Barron, attended the event’s Designers’ Night at the Red Dot Design Museum to collect the award. The museum is situated on the former site of the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex in Essen Germany and houses the world’s largest exhibition of contemporary design. Neil was overwhelmed by the reception and venue, stating, ‘Coal was a big part of the industrial revolution and that it’s fitting that this abandoned mine has been repurposed to celebrate the designers of today’.
The grandiose of the event was not lost on Neil who was incredibly impressed by how well organised the entire night was. Everyone in attendance was dressed up and there were many amazing projects on show. Neil said he “was blown away by the scale and level of organisation at the awards. I’ve never seen so much red carpet, amazing canapes and a huge diversity of design all in the most dramatic regenerated industrial setting. Stunning event.”
“The ceremony evolved into a party where the atmosphere was electric. There was great food, a wonderful gin bar serving German gin and delicious Veltins German beer too. It was a night I’ll remember for many years.”
Neil admired many of the designs on display throughout the evening, but one in particular that stood out was the Gustav Bicycle from Schindelhauer Bikes. They are practical, stylish and well engineered. We were lucky enough to be next to them in Velo Berlin and had Liteloks displayed over a few of their gorgeous bikes. Its elegant design was described by judges as combining ‘a modern appearance with a tangible sense of tradition.’ It was also lovely to see our Welsh cycling industry friends, Frog bikes in the awards as well as the contemporary beauty of Canyon bikes.
The evening was full of innovation and awe-inspiring design, it truly is an honour to have our Litelok Gold Wearable recognized by this prestigious award. The quest for elegant simplicity, which we hold so dear at Litelok, is not easy and all of the work on show demonstrated this really well. We have more innovative projects in the pipeline, so hopefully this won’t be the last time we win this coveted prize.
